Moth Mask Making with Shelley Moth
For my one-week story, I took on the opportunity to visit a local monster-mask artist, getting a preview into how a mask is sculpted.
Going by his artist name, Shelley Moth (@moths_masks on Instagram) has been creating monster masks for a few years now after being inspired by his love for horror movies and his close friend’s influence. Currently working for Monster Resurrection Studios in Las Vegas, NV, selling his masks, inventorying other artists’ masks, candles and art, he hopes to utilize his experience and connections to create a horror movie one day where the actors are wearing his creations. He also hopes to have his own art exhibition at various monster conventions once the pandemic is not as severe as it is now. With his full-time job, Moth only creates masks during his free time, which is three days a week. In the last week of February and first week of March, I was able to get a tour of the art space and to see how the sculpting process occurs. To make one mask takes about a month or so for Moth.
