Life of an Artist, Mekyas Getahun
Mekyas Getahun is a 27-year-old Las Vegas-based artist with around 23,500 followers on Instagram. His work focuses on resin paintings with an abstract perspective. Getahun’s creations come with the ultimate goal of selling the pieces to customers and clients alike.
For my one-month story, I documented the behind-the-scenes of art preparation to creation to selling. Getahun’s artistry work is his main form of income where he sells on Etsy. He has an at-home art studio where all of the creativity happens. Notably, Getahun has graduated from UNLV in 2018 with a major in psychology. He felt like UNLV ruined his passion for art— it was not until after graduation that he rediscovered his love for creating.
The first step in the process is buying the supplies. Being the famous artist he is, when we first walked into Blick Art Materials, the employees greeted him and took him under his care, helping him finding the exact supplies needed to create his pieces. Getahun said he goes there pretty often. In his allotted schedule, Getahun usually creates his artwork in a close timeframe from when he buys the supplies. I was able to take photos of him creating the week after. To create his art, it took about half an hour— the drying time on the other hand was of a longer duration, or 24 to 48 hours. He does an additional two weeks of drying to get the specific canvas texture that he wants. During the drying time, he takes photos of them and waits to see if any customers want to buy—Getahun says depending on the color palette of the piece, it could sell the same day he posts the listing, or it take a few weeks. After it sells, he takes it to his favorite shipping place to take care of the packaging.
